Let The Drips Fall

Last year, Andrew and I went to an Art in The Park exhibit to support our friend who had some paintings on display. While we were walking around and looking at the other vendors, the picture above caught my eye.

I asked the young girl about it: how did you capture such a moment?

She then told me about the work that went into the set up. She would have to wait for the perfect day, with the right lighting, and then go outside to her driveway. She poked a hole into a piece of plastic, set the camera up just right, and finally she said "then I would just let the drips fall."

I don’t know why, but that story stuck with me. There was something about the combination of work and wait that I found so relatable. There is so much in life where we need to do some heavy set up; lots of work involved to get us to where we want to be. When that type of work must happen, it can feel like it always needs to be that way, that it's all about progress and movement and action. Once we do the work, though, often there’s nothing more we can do but sit back and try to capture the moment.

I bought the picture that day and now when I see it hanging in my home I think about that young artist, waiting patiently for those drips to fall, hoping one will be just right. Where are you today? Do you need to do the work that leads to the moment? Or are you in the moment?

Don't miss out on the magic of capturing where you are, because you are too busy moving on to the next bit of work. Just enjoy it; let the drips fall.
